Personally I don't hate it but it does seem a bit too cluttered for my liking... I'm not sure why they changed it to be honest... Often the reaction to a redesign is "If it ain't broke why fix it?"

Certainly, it hasn't been that long since the last redesign... why mess with it?

One of my major gripes about my iPhone (apart from the lack of cut and paste, forward an sms and send a contact via sms) is lack of battery life.

I've found this to be particularly annoying when I am out of the office and need to be checking and writing emails all day. My iPhone seems to run out of battery towards the end of the day, right when I want to be able to listen to music on the way home or call or sms or watch a movie etc etc.

Mophie have just released the Juice Pack Air, the first Apple certified “Works With iPhone 3G” attached battery and it is available for USD$99.95 on their website and at Apple stores worldwide (apparently... let me know if you see one).
